Review: Trolled (Trolled Saga #1) by D.K Bussell

33271719Seventeen-year-old student Nat Lawler doesn’t know her orc from her elf bow. She’s never swung a sword before, never ridden a unicorn, or fought a troll outside of the internet. And yet here she is, trapped in a fantasy world and tasked with defeating its evil queen, Drensila the Black. Thankfully, some of Nat’s roleplayer friends were thrown into the mix too, and join her on her epic quest. They’ve spent their lives preparing for this moment, but now it’s time for action, because this fantasy just got real!

Trolled is the first novel in the Trolled saga and follows the exploits of Nat Lawler, her boyfriend and his roleplaying friends when they are transported into the middle of a real life fantasy adventure.

When Nat is talked into joining her boyfriend Terry and his friends LARP-ing (Live Action Roleplaying) she never imagined that they would end up being transported to another realm and aligning herself with Elves and Dwarves to fight against the evil Drensila the Black. Taking things in her stride, Nat embraces her new-found destiny as the chosen one, but her new path soon drives a wedge between her and Terry. Nat realises that this isn’t just a fight to save the inhabitants of this other world, but to protect her friends. If she fails then they might never get home.

Trolled is a really fun read. The style of writing is upbeat and filled with British slang and pop culture references that made me smile on many occasions. Nat is a flawed but very likeable heroine whose stubbornness and determination gets her into trouble on more than one occasion. The supporting cast develop as the novel progresses and whilst at first they seem a little bland they quickly come into their own.

There are some darker moments, but overall this is a light-hearted and entertaining read and I am looking forward to reading the second novel in the series.

It Takes Death to Reach a Star
By Stu Jones & Gareth Worthington
Genre: Sci Fi, dystopian, apocalyptic

THE WORLD YOU KNOW IS DEAD. WE DID THIS TO OURSELVES.

The epidemic struck at the end of the Third World War. Fighting over oil, power, and religion, governments ignored the rise of an anti-bacterial-resistant plague. In just five years, the Earth was annihilated. Only one city survived—Etyom—a frozen hell-hole in northern Siberia, still engulfed in conflict.

The year is 2251.

Two groups emerged from the ashes of the old world. Within the walled city of Lower Etyom, dwell the Robusts—descendants of the poor who were immune to The New Black Death. Above them, in a metropolis of pristine platforms called Lillipads, live the Graciles—the progeny of the super-rich; bio-engineered to resist the plague.

Mila Solokoff is a Robust who trades information in a world where knowing too much can get you killed. Caught in a deal-gone-bad, she’s forced to take a high-risk job for a clandestine organization hell-bent on revolution.

Demitri Stasevich is a Gracile with a dark secret—a sickness that, if discovered, will surely get him Ax’d. His only relief is an illegal narcotic produced by the Robusts, and his only means of obtaining it is a journey to the arctic hell far below New Etyom.

Thrust together in the midst of a sinister plot that threatens all life above and below the cloud line, Mila and Demitri must master their demons and make a choice—one that will either salvage what’s left of the human race, or doom it to extinction…

Review: Nocturne (Fourth Talisman #1) by Kat Ross

35836852Nocturne, a wilderness of eternal night.

Solis, a wasteland of endless day.

Nazafareen is a Breaker, a mortal who has the rare ability to shatter spell magic—although her power carries a high price. With the memories of her former self erased and nowhere else to turn, she comes to Nocturne hoping to start a new life under the triple moons of the darklands.

But when an assassin forces Nazafareen to flee to the sunlit mortal city of Delphi, she finds herself embroiled in a deeper mystery whose origins lie far in the past. Why was the continent sundered into light and dark a thousand years before? And what really happened to the elegant but ruthless creatures who nearly reduced the world to ashes? The new Oracle might know, but she’s outlawed magic and executes anyone caught practicing it. Nazafareen must hide her powers and find a way out of the city—before it’s too late.

As the net slowly tightens, something ancient and vengeful begins to stir in the arid death zone called the Kiln. A dashing daeva named Darius is pursuing Nazafareen, but so are a multitude of enemies. War is brewing again. Can she stay alive long enough to stop it?

Nocturne is the first novel in the Fourth Talisman series by Kat Ross. Centred around mortal and magic-breaker Nazafareen, Nocturne follows her on her quest to restore her memories and discover who she really is.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Nocturne. It is a brilliantly-crafted fantasy novel with a rich and immersive world that draws in the reader right from the beginning. The lands, religions and magics have been developed in such a vividly descriptive way that you feel as though you are actually living within the pages. I loved the characters of Nazafareen and Darius. Nazafareen is a very strong and determined woman who, despite realising that she may not like all that she learns about her previous life, is fully resolved to find out the truth and protect those whom she cares about. Darius is equally strong and determined to protect Nazafareen and his unwavering love for her is clearly felt throughout the novel. There is also a wide-range of supporting characters all whom have parts to play as the story unfolds.

One thing I did not realise until I started reading is that the Fourth Talisman series is a follow-up series to the Fourth Element series which I have not read. Whilst I will certainly be reading it, I will probably finish this series first so I can re-discover Nazafareen’s past with her however some readers may prefer to start with the original series.

Nocturne is an amazing first novel in the Fourth Talisman series and I enjoyed reading it very much. If you love fantasy then I definitely recommend you checking out the series.
