Lovesick Titans

By Amanda Meuwissen

Genre: Gay Romance, Urban Fantasy, Superhero

Not even a Titan can always stand up to a God.

Malcom Cho is in over his head, wrapped up in a love affair with his superhero nemesis Zeus, who most people in Olympus City only know as Detective Danny Grant.

Lovesick Titans begins where Lovesick Gods left off, after a heist gone wrong that ended with a museum guard dead and Mal and Danny beaten and exhausted from their fight with the new threat in town, Cassidy Ludgate—Hades.

Unaware that Ludgate’s true motivation is revenge for the death of his father at Zeus’s hands, Mal wants only to keep Danny close, while Danny races to solve the cases surrounding Ludgate to stop him from whatever he has planned for them next.

What Mal doesn’t know is that Danny didn’t pursue him with the purest of intentions but sought to break his heart in retaliation for not being there when he needed him in the fight against Thanatos. Even though Danny no longer seeks that end, the lies between them loom like a shadow about to descend upon them both.

And Hades has only begun to toy with them…

Edo’s Awakening is a companion novella to The Conscious Dreamer Series and events within this novella take place before The Heaviness of Knowing, which is the first book in the series.

In Edo’s Awakening, dream traveller Edo is tasked with assisting his Earth connection Liam in the building of test rockets. His work is overseen by The Keepers whom he believes are Gods and must be obeyed without question. Edo is one of the best travellers and he is confident that he will complete his mission. However when he finds himself unable to make contact with Liam, Edo is called in front of The Keepers’ Representatives where he learns that the test rocket killed an Earthling thus putting his entire mission in jeopardy. If Liam fails on Earth then Edo will die. Until he can re-establish a connection with Liam, Edo finds himself stripped of his caste and forced into manual labour as punishment for the failure. Forced to rely completely on his helper, Danyu, Edo begins to discover the truth about The Keepers and the secret resistance that is building against them.

I really enjoyed learning how Edo discovered the truth about The Keepers. He is one of my favourite characters in the series so it was great to read his backstory and discover more about his past. The novella also gave some more information of the early days of the resistance as well as setting things up nicely for the first novel in the series. I had great sympathy for Edo throughout the novella. His dedication and fear of The Keepers was very well conveyed and you really got a sense of how completely in control they were despite them being more of a passive threat rather than ever present.

Edo’s Awakening is a great read. It’s fast-paced and gripping right from the first page, and serves as an excellent introduction to The Conscious Dreamer series.

Tempus Investigations is a novel written as though it were a TV series. When the author first approached me with the review request I was really intrigued and thought what a unique idea! If he pulls this off it’ll be an awesome read. And he did!

This novel serves as season 1. It follows the investigations of Private Detective Jim Corrigan who takes on cases of the supernatural variety either from direct approaches by clients or ones that were passed to him by his contact in the police force.

Having survived a shooting in 1933 Jim awakens to discover that he is now immortal. He can also communicate with spirits and uses this gift to help with his investigations, although the ghosts aren’t always that keen on helping! The novel is divided into four standalone stories that, like a TV series, build on the plot running through the series as a whole.

I really enjoyed reading each ‘episode’ in the series. Each one was very different and cleverly crafted to keep the reader guessing right up until the last moment. They also built on developing the main characters, their relationships and, like in a TV show, served as introduction episodes for Jim’s team. I loved the fond banter between Jim and Mercedes, high-lighting more than words just how close they are.  The style of writing is excellent. The dialogue flowed well and the fast-pace immediately immersed you into the world.

If you enjoy supernatural and mystery fiction (and also TV series’ in these genres) then I definitely recommend reading Tempus Investigations.

Heroes aren’t meant to act like their villains—or fall in love with them.

The elements touch everyone on Earth—Fire, Water, even Light—but every so often someone becomes more attuned to their elemental leaning and develops true power. When an evil Elemental known as Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first hero—Zeus. But the death toll caused by defeating Thanatos changed Zeus, who by day is young detective Danny Grant.

It’s been six months since Thanatos terrorized the city at the start of Lovesick Gods. Danny should be used to his duty behind the mask, but the recent past haunts him. His girlfriend left him, he snaps at the barest provocation, his life feels empty—he needs an outlet, any outlet to pull him out of his depression.

Enter notorious thief Malcolm Cho, the Ice Elemental Prometheus. There was a time when Danny welcomed a fight with Cho, filled with colorful banter and casual flirtations that were a relief compared to Thanatos. Even as a criminal, Cho had recognized the threat Thanatos posed and promised to help Danny stop him, but the day Danny needed Cho, he never showed. Cho was the reason so many people died that day—including Danny’s mother.

Danny decides to teach the man a lesson and fan the fire of their attraction into something more. At worst, he’ll get some no-strings-attached sex out of the deal and finally blow off steam; at best, he’ll get Cho to fall in love with him and then break his heart to spite him. Danny doesn’t expect to fall for Cho in the process, and he certainly can’t predict the much darker threat on the horizon.

Tristan is the son and heir to the House of Listar. Other than growing up with the expectations that come with his title, he leads a comfortable life. That all changes when his father is brutally murdered by Gerwold, the Baron of Belnair. Tristan is forced to go on the run, watching helplessly as his father’s killer takes his inheritance and Gerwold’s son steals away the girl that Tristan loves. Seeking refuge with a band of thieves, Tristan must avenge his father and prevent Gerwold from achieving his ultimate goal; to become King.

A Coronation of Kings is a fast-paced and action-packed fantasy novel. It is the first book in the A Kingdom Divided series and not only does a great job of setting up for later novels in the series but is a very enjoyable standalone read too. I liked how the author didn’t get overly bogged down with description. Whilst there was certainly enough that I could immerse myself in the world that he has created, too much can be distracting and the right balance was achieved here.

At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Tristan’s character. He seemed a little arrogant and immature when the novel started, but throughout his character developed as he was forced to grow up quickly due to events. I found myself liking him more and more as I continued to read, which shows the skill of the author; creating a main character who endears himself to readers over time rather than be instantly likeable. It was very refreshing and made me root for Tristan that much more because of it.

I really enjoyed reading A Coronation of Kings. It’s an excellent novel and a real page turner. I can’t wait to read further books in the series.

I really enjoyed reading Rune of the Apprentice which is the first novel in The Rune Chronicles series. The story follows young apprentice Aleksi who was born with a rune on his palm; a rune that will grant him with a vast power, if it doesn’t end up killing him first.

The world building in Rune of the Apprentice is excellent. The author has gone to a lot of trouble and taken much time to craft his universe and all the characters within it. Page by page you are immediately drawn into the world of Terra. Aleksi’s development as a character was subtle and natural as the novel progressed. I liked the supporting cast a lot and the friendships that were forged between the characters. The action scenes flow well and keep you on the edge of your seat.

To sum up, Rune of the Apprentice is a wonderfully descriptive and well-crafted read with many carefully thought-out and developed characters. The plot itself is very engaging and a natural page-turner. I look forward to reading the second novel in the series.

Entrepreneur Josh Scribner has made a fortune from an idea that may well be the beginning of the end of the human race. In the year 2038, an older Josh is desperate to make things right and in the process save the life of his daughter. To do this, Josh develops a way to send messages back in time and he and a close friend and colleague embark on a daring mission to change the past.

In present day whilst on a camping trip, ex-air force pilot Maria Kerrigan finds a strange marker buried in the ground. It comes with instructions to deliver the marker to scientist Dr Qualls. Despite her misgivings, Maria’s curiosity gets the better of her and upon delivering the object she and her friend Lia become drawn into a battle to save the human race.

I really enjoyed reading A Sickness in Time. The science behind the plot was very well thought-out and completely believable. The approach was so methodical and plausible that you could easily believe that it might just work. The main characters were developed, flawed – but not so much that they were unlikeable – and very relatable. They all worked well together and their differences complimented each other nicely. However, the standout character for me was Lia. Here was a character who had been through so much and despite her difficulties was able to provide much needed support to Maria as well as becoming an integral part of the team.

A Sickness in Time is a compelling read that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and there is a nice twist to the end which I didn’t see coming!

The Jakkattu Vector is the first novel in the Jakkattu series.

Julip Thorne is a young woman living in the Greenland Human Reservation. Her life seems to have been mapped out for her since birth as it is for all humans born in the Reservation. However, Julip is not content to accept the Mezna as gods and seeks to discover the truth, even at great cost.

For years Sabaal has endured torture at the hands of her god-like captors until one day she is able to escape her prison. On the run she finds unexpected allies in half-robot teks and mezna-human hybrids. Eventually she finds herself on Earth and must use all her survival skills to not only protect herself but also a new born baby.

This is a very well written novel and a good start to the series. There is plenty of action to straightaway draw the reader into the two different worlds. I loved Sabaal’s character from the start. She’s tough, does what is necessary yet there is a softer side to her that comes out as the novel progresses. Even after all she has been through with help from her allies she is still able to show compassion and empathy. Julip I found difficult to relate to although I think this had a lot to do with the dialogue in her parts. I found it hard to follow at times and so her sections of the novel were rather frustrating for me. I did persevere with it and the finale did not disappoint. I would definitely read book 2 but as I found it a bit of a struggle to follow in places I can only give it 3.5 stars.

Concurrence by Marc Rokoff

Phillip has dedicated his life to achieving cross-time communication through the NOLTEX assembler. He only breaks away from his work once daily to visit Justin, his comatose boyfriend, in the local hospital. When a sudden breakthrough allows Phillip to talk with himself three months in the future, there’s plenty of reason to celebrate the success. He has single-handedly invented one of humanity’s greatest scientific achievements.

The celebration soon gives way to confusion when Phillip begins receiving strange messages from himself much further in the future. Adding to the intrigue is a curiously timed spatial anomaly that appears to be approaching Earth from a distant point in deep space. Is the timing of these two first-of-their-kind scientific events a coincidence? Or is there a connection between Phillip’s communications with the future and the approaching anomaly? When a shocking global event upends Phillip’s attempts to investigate, he suddenly finds himself alone to resolve the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced.

An exciting piece of science fiction literature, Concurrence is an engaging, quick read that’s fun yet thought-provoking. This mind-bending scifi book offers up a satisfying time travel adventure for genre fans and newbies alike.

Phillip is a scientist who has dedicated his life to his work. His boyfriend Justin now lies in hospital in a coma and Phillip is convinced that his sudden breakthrough will help him to change the past and save Justin. His breakthrough allows him to communicate with his future self at various points in time, but then Phillip realises that there is much more to it than that. And when a global catastrophe occurs, Phillip realises that he is humanities only hope.

Concurrence is an engaging novella. Phillip is a well-rounded character, with imperfections that are relatable and sympathetic.  His closure and the end of the novella is bitter-sweet but filled with hope for the future. The author successfully blends science fiction and dystopia to create a very thrilling and enjoyable read.
