Adam drew a breath as he sat down on the edge of their bed. He could tell by the look on his boyfriend’s face that Eric was not going to back down this time. Momentarily closing his eyes, Adam recalled their conversation when he was still in hospital. He wanted to be honest with Eric. He just did not know how at times.
“Iain was just worried because of everything that has happened,” he said. “He was concerned that going back to London would be too much for me.”
“Is it?”
“No. I want to go. I want to help you to stop Ivan.”
Eric’s expression was still troubled, and he was silent for several seconds before continuing. “But are you all right?”
“Yes.”
“Okay,” Eric said as he sat down beside Adam and took his hand. “Can I ask you to do something for me? Keep away from Williams.”
“Why?” Adam demanded despite already knowing the answer.
“I don’t want you to do something that you will regret.”
“Like kill him? I very much doubt I’d regret that!”
“Williams has to answer for what he has done,” Eric told him firmly. “Not just to you, but everyone that he has hurt.”
“And he will.”
“Not like that.”
“How is your way better?”
“Because when I hear you talking like this, I fear that you’re taking a step towards a path that I cannot follow you down.”
“Eric…”
“I don’t want to lose you like that, Adam. I can’t.”
“I’m sorry,” Adam murmured quietly as he wrapped his arms around Eric and drew him closer. In truth, Adam did not know what he was apologising for. For what he had already done or for what he knew he would do before all of this was over.
